UN Guided Tours 50 years of continuity and change

UN Tour Guides outside

“You never get a second chance to make a first impression – and to many people, their first impression of the United Nations comes in the form of a tour guide,” said Deputy-Secretary-General Jan Eliasson, addressing approximately 50 former tour guides from the 1960s who gathered in the Delegates’ Dining Room for a reunion luncheon recently.

Organized as a private reunion by the former guides themselves, it was an opportunity to reconnect with old friends, reminisce and see what had changed since the heyday of Guided Tours.

UN4U – UN officials speak to students at schools

UN4U briefing at UN International School

UN4U is an outreach program which brings UN officials to speak to students in their schools.  When first established, UN4U focused on outreach to New York City public schools and was centered around UN Day activities on October 24.

Now approaching its seventh year, UN4U has been broadened to include both public and private schools, with speakers travelling beyond New York City to neighboring suburban communities and even to other states – Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Connecticut.  UN4U now spans the entire academic year, from September to June.
